In Orbit

This unique bar, built entirely of ice and snow, is inspired by an astronaut’s journey from Earth to the space station and further out into space.

When you step into the ICEBAR, you become an astronaut boarding a spacecraft. You’re taken on a luminous journey through space, from liftoff to the striking view of Earth below and finally the arrival at the space station, where each part of the bar reveals a new chapter of the voyage.

So put on your spacesuit, say goodbye to gravity and let the vastness of infinite space become a memorable part of your visit.

ICEHOTEL is located on the banks of the Torne River in Jukkasjärvi, northern Sweden. Each winter, the river freezes, and the ice becomes the building material for both ICEHOTEL and our ICEBARs. When the season ends, or when we redesign an ICEBAR, the ice simply melts and returns to water. Ice is a renewable building material, shaped by nature and borrowed for a short time before we give it back.

The total amount of ice we harvest for ICEHOTEL and all ICEBARs corresponds to just ten seconds of the Torne River’s natural flow. The harvest takes place each March when the ice is at its thickest. In Jukkasjärvi, the ice is stored using the Arctic climate and energy from solar panels.

The ice is transported to our ICEBARs using Frigoscandia trucks, which use climate-neutral cooling technology based on ammonia to cool the ice. Read more about their sustainability initiatives here.

To cool Icebar Copenhagen, approximately 118 kWh per day is used, which corresponds to 463 kWh of energy per square meter per year — in line with an average restaurant or bar, which typically uses 300–600 kWh/m² annually. The bar is powered by green electricity, making energy use as efficient and sustainable as possible.
