Read allSustainability at ICEBAR
At ICEHOTEL and ICEBAR, our work with ice is closely connected to the nature around us. Located on the banks of the Torne River in Jukkasjärvi in northern Sweden, we harvest our ice every winter from one of the cleanest rivers in Northern Europe. Every winter, the river freezes naturally, and the ice becomes the building material for ICEHOTEL and our ICEBARs around the world. When the season ends — or when we redesign an ICEBAR — the ice simply melts and returns to water again.
Harvesting & Storing the Ice
We harvest the ice in March, when it is at its thickest and clearest. The total volume of ice we harvest for ICEHOTEL and all ICEBARs corresponds to roughly ten seconds of the Torne River’s natural flow, a reminder of how abundant this resource is.After harvesting, the ice is stored in our production hall in Jukkasjärvi, cooled mainly by the Arctic climate and supported by locally produced solar energy.
Transporting the Ice
Transport is a significant part of our footprint, and we strive to make it as efficient and sustainable as possible. Our ice is delivered using Frigoscandia’s mass-balanced system, ensuring that an equivalent amount of renewable fuel is used within their transport network. For our ICEBAR deliveries, this allocated fuel is Preem Redefine HVO100 — the first liquid fuel to receive the Nordic Swan Ecolabel. It contains 0% fossil oil and reduces fossil emissions by at least 90% compared to traditional diesel.
At the ICEBAR
Once installed, the ice is kept cool using green electricity wherever available. Our goal is always to operate with the most energy-efficient solutions possible. In Copenhagen, for example, ICEBAR is cooled with a high-tech system designed to minimize energy use. Its consumption — approximately 460 kWh per m² per year — falls within the typical range for restaurants and bars (300–600 kWh/m² annually).By combining efficient cooling systems with certified green electricity, we aim to keep the environmental impact of running an ICEBAR as low as possible.
A Material Borrowed from Nature
Ice is a natural, renewable material borrowed from the River Torne. We borrow it for a season, transform it into art and experiences, and then return it to the cycle it came from. That approach guides us — not only in how we harvest and use the ice, but in how we transport it and operate our ICEBARs in a responsible way.
